Don’t go outside

by Simon Graham

don’t go outside

the streets are empty

the rain is acid

and the people will steal your job

don’t go outside

choose home over fear

and ignore the floorboards

when they buckle

and crack

they speak of fiscal cliffs and debt ceilings

like they are out of reach

when they are beneath our feet

in the hot tip

of your cigarette

under our pillows

in our sex moans

and pungent colognes

traversing our power cords

from sockets

to the laptops that lay sleeping

next to us

while we can’t
